CLASS WEBSITE: The Ethics Classroom and K-State Online (grades)

CLASS OBJECTIVE: To build a basic understanding of the issues and difficulties involved in ethical decision making in the workplace, both in government, business, and as a member of society.

ATTENDANCE: I will not be recording attendance nor will any absences be counted against your final grade. There will not be any pop quizzes or other spontaneous acts on my part to coerce you into attending class. However, your attendance and participation in class discussions will be very helpful as you prepare for each examination. This is especially true for classes that meet only once each week. I also can assure you that those students who perform best (grade-wise) do attend class regularly.

EXAMINATIONS and IN-CLASS WRITING ASSIGNMENTS: There will be three examinations given during the semester, each worth 100 points. The last examination will be held during final week and will not be comprehensive in scope. There will also be four in-class assignments given during the semester and each will be worth 25 points. These assignments are intended to replace a semester paper and will require a thoughtful, well-stated answer.

I will give you at least one week's notice before any in-class assignment is given. These assignments cannot be rescheduled, i.e. if missed they cannot be made up.

In all, plan on a grading structure of about 400 possible points. However, I reserve some discretion in this matter. You always will have confidential access to your grades after the first class assignment or examination has been returned by contacting me. In addition, I will post grades immediately to the University website (K-State Online) for those students who wish to use this feature. Please ask whenever you have questions or concerns about your class status.

GRADING: Traditional. 90=A, 80=B, 70=C, 60=D, etc. Please note that I do not curve grades.

CLASS CONSIDERATIONS:

(1) This class will be taught primarily as a lecture course. However, I welcome classroom participation and questions. You always should be prepared to give your opinion on the issue being discussed in class and I may ask for that opinion frequently.

(2) I will be giving you some selected readings and other handouts in addition to those found in the assigned text. You will be responsible for these on examinations, class assignments, or class discussion. Please note that these handouts will be available on the class website (www.ethicsclassroom.info) under the Document Center.

(3) The material covered on any examination or class assignment will come from the text, class lectures, assigned readings, library and Internet research, and various handouts.

(4) Kansas State University is committed to providing a learning environment that is free from any discriminating action or unwelcome harassment. I am committed to this premise as well. If you believe you have experienced illegal discrimination or unwelcome harassment, contact the University?s Office of Affirmative Action at 532-6220 immediately. You can obtain your own copy of the College of Business Administration (CBA) Student Handbook online in an Adobe PDF format which may answer questions not found in this syllabus.

(5) If you need any reasonable accommodation due to a physical or mental problem, please let me know immediately. Your concerns will be addressed confidentially. If you aren't certain about what classifies as a disability, please check with Disabled Student Services at 532-6441.

(6) DON'T CHEAT! Please believe me that there are no redeeming qualities to being dishonest. Don't do it to yourself or your classmates. The consequences always are severe and long lasting.

Also, remember that Kansas State University has an Honor System based on personal integrity, which is presumed to be sufficient assurance that, in academic matters, one's work is performed honestly and without unauthorized assistance. (I encourage each of you to visit the University's Undergraduate Honor System website and review as much of the posted material as possible.)

 (7) Late afternoon and evening classes can (and do) interfere with other aspects of campus life and I know you might miss a class on occasion. However, my job is to create a classroom environment that will stimulate your ability to learn and make you want to attend class. I?ll try to do my part, you try to do yours, and the semester should pass quickly.

 OTHER ISSUES:

Since teaching is not my full-time occupation, please understand that my day-to-day availability may be limited. However, I want you to do well in this class. Do not hesitate to email me, call me, or arrange a meeting at your convenience to discuss any material that you are having difficulty with.

I encourage you to use the class website and sign up for frequent emails using the Notify Me option on the home page of the class website.

Have a great semester!
